- Cape Bailey Coastal Walk Place: Cape Bailey Where: Cronulla The Cape Baily Coastal Walk takes you from Kurnell to Cronulla. The path lines the incredible sandstone cliffs – the ones you see when you fly into Sydney over the ocean. The national park was recently affected by a large bush fire. That occurred last Father’s Day in September, and even at Easter in April, there was plenty of evidence of the fire’s intensity and extent. The walk is a mix of formed paths, sandstone slabs and sand. The formed walkways, using a raised grate over sensitive areas, appear pretty random […]
- Canberra Balloon Spectacular Place: Canberra Where: ACT Call me crazy. Who does a road trip to Canberra and back – all before midday? We hit the road at the ridiculous time of 3am, heading south to the national capital before sunrise for the annual Balloon Spectacular.
- Thailand Where: Thailand Some jobs have great perks. Mine doesn’t. My wife’s does. Cheap or even ocassionaly free trips are one of the big pluses of her working in travel. She recently won a couple of nights free accomodation in Thailand. While she has been there previously, I haven’t, so we decided to do a quick trip to Phuket via Bangkok. We stayed at the JW Marriott north of the airport for the first couple of days, lounging around by the pool. Then it was down to Patong where we stayed at Merlin Beach. We did a day trip around […]
- Figure of Eight Pools Where: Royal National Park, Sydney This is one of those places I’ve been wanting to visit for some time. It’s been around for a long time but is amazingly popular thanks to a multitude of Facebook and Instagram posts. It’s not easy to get to and the warnings on the official National Parks website are pretty clear. Freak waves, regular injuries, remote rescue and an ‘extremely challenging’ walk to and from the isolated site. We timed our tip to coincide with low tide, as recommended. You have to do this. If there are waves crashing over the rocks, […]
- Bouddi National Park Where: Central Coast, NSW Sydney and New South Wales have so many spectacular coastal and seaside walks – whether it’s the iconic Bondi to Bronte walk, the Spit to Many walk, or the Seacliff Bridge, we truly are spoilt for options. One we haven’t done before is the Bouddi National Park coastal walk. Setting off from a little beach called Putty Beach near Killcare, the walk heads along the beach and clifftops, taking in amazing views of the coastline. I imagine it would have been even more spectacular just a week earlier when there was rough seas, […]
- Singapore Where: Singapore I recently had the opportunity to travel to Singapore for work. It was a short trip – arriving late on Monday, presenting at a conference and back on Thursday. While there I took the opportunity to see a bit of the city – certainly a lot more since I last visited, transiting through Changi Airport on the way to Europe about 10 years back. I stayed on Orchard Avenue, the main shopping strip of Singapore. It was hot and sticky walking around, although a few people who live there said this was the cold season! To be […]
- You know that old ad, where the woman is rolling a big ball of string around Victoria? The tagline was "You'll Love Every Piece Of Victoria". This past weekend it was like we were living the ad - from the Yarra Valley and Melbourne to the beautiful wintery surrounds of Daylesford.
- Mount Kosciuszko Where: Snowy Mountains Climb Mount Kosciuszko, they said. It will be beautiful, they said. We may have just chosen the wrong day. Easter Sunday seemed like a great day to climb Australia’s highest peak. Something about Jesus and a mountain, or something? We had driven in from Albury in the morning, seeing some spectacular countryside along the NSW and Victorian border, where the rivers wind through the countryside. Upon arriving at Thredbo, the clouds started closing in. After forking out a ridiculous $70 for the chairlift to Thredbo Tops, we started the 6.6km walk to the top of […]
- Craig’s Hut Where: Victoria Craig’s Hut is one of those places I’ve always wanted to visit. On Good Friday 2017, we visited this special place and even camped there overnight. Perched high atop a ridge in the Victorian high country, Craig’s Hut is an iconic photographic location. We even have a framed Ken Duncan Panograph of this place. Originally built for the movie The Man From Snowy River, the hut has been rebuilt after being destroyed by bush fires. We stopped off in Mansfield for lunch before starting the drive towards the Hut. The countryside is beautiful, close to Mount […]
