Let’s face it. In Australia, we are spoilt when it comes to beaches. They have beautiful golden sand, there’s always plenty of space, and they’re free.
As I’ve seen in places like France before, European beaches are so different.
The word best to describe them: gravelly. Like Joe Cocker.
We decided to have a beach day today, walking around the track from Positano to Fornillo. As we’ve worked out well and truly by now, if you have to walk down lots of steps, you need to walk up them later.
One we rounded the point, we got our first glimpse of the beach, covered with rows and rows and rows of beach chairs and umbrellas.
The chairs are eight euro each. Well worth it to keep you off the gravel and in shade!
Venturing into the water isn’t easy. It’s like walking down a hot, dirt road then navigating your way across someone’s rockery. And lurking below the water…
Despite the RTA standard road base lining the beach, it was pretty amazing swimming in the ocean with centuries old forts and homes clinging to the cliff tops above.
While it looks fairly old school, of course there’s free wifi included with your sun chair.
If there is one benefit to swimming on a gravel beach, it’s that you don’t end up with sand wedged into your swimmers of boardshorts. It certainly makes the 402 steps to our front door a little more comfortable.
