Mount Kosciuszko

Where: Snowy Mountains

Climb Mount Kosciuszko, they said. It will be beautiful, they said. We may have just chosen the wrong day.

Easter Sunday seemed like a great day to climb Australia’s highest peak. Something about Jesus and a mountain, or something?

We had driven in from Albury in the morning, seeing some spectacular countryside along the NSW and Victorian border, where the rivers wind through the countryside. Upon arriving at Thredbo, the clouds started closing in.

After forking out a ridiculous $70 for the chairlift to Thredbo Tops, we started the 6.6km walk to the top of the mountain. Being a mountain, most of it was uphill of course.

While the incline wasn’t too bad, the fact that the wind was bitterly cold and had a wind chill of about minus 5 degrees, it was tough going.

After about two and a bit hours of walking, with a few short stops along the way, we reached the summit. Just us and about 100 other people, all jostling to get a photo of the quite mundane marker that puts this location at the top of Australia.

Being Easter, it was time to crack open a bunny for some sustenance, ready for the walk back. Downhill is much easier!

We stayed the night in Jindabyne, and after a quick drone flight to take in the dam, we started the drive back to Sydney to beat the long weekend traffic.
